Western Carolina University (WCU) seeks applicants for the position of Director of the School of Nursing (SON). This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track appointment at the associate or full professor level. Rank is commensurate with experience. The Director is the chief academic and administrative officer of the SON, reports directly to the Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) and represents the school on the Executive Council. The position demands an energetic leader who is passionate about teaching/learning, scholarship, students, and all aspects of nursing practice.

The Director is responsible for leading and managing the SON activities related to provision of all levels of nursing education; advancing innovative educational programs which address the nursing shortage; assuring compliance with the broad scope of standards/requirements for various regulatory agencies, including the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs; representing the SON with diverse constituencies; advancing the reputation and visibility of the school locally, nationally, and internationally and directing activities related to fulfilling the vision, mission and strategic plan of the school, CHHS and university.

The CHHS is comprised of five academic Departments and/or Schools including the School of Nursing, the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorder, the Department of Physical Therapy, the Department of Social Work, and the School of Health Sciences. The CHHS is housed on the WCU Cullowhee campus in the 46,000 square foot Health and Human Sciences building. The CHHS, including the SON, has a significant presence in Asheville at the Biltmore Park Instructional Site.

Minimum Qualifications
• Doctoral degree with at least one graduate degree in nursing
• Licensed (or eligible for licensure) to practice nursing in North Carolina
• Eligible for the rank of associate professor or professor
• Minimum of five years of full time experience in a nursing education program
• Progressive increase in leadership responsibilities toward a director’s position in an academic nursing setting

Preferred Qualifications
• Academic Doctoral Degree
• Experience with CCNE and COA accreditation
• Record of successful, dynamic leadership with integrity with progressive growth towards an academic leadership position
• Experience with management of human and fiscal resources
• Experience in strategic planning
• Understanding of and experience with curriculum content, design, and evaluation
• Strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills including the ability to listen well, to consult, and to make decisions.
• Ability to work well at all levels in a complex and diverse environment, fostering a spirit of collaboration with faculty, colleagues, and administrators.
• Outstanding judgment and the capacity to set and communicate priorities
• Active involvement in the nursing profession and understanding of key issues in nursing education
