The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care.

The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care has a proud and rich combination of academic activities and service contributions. Since its founding in 1943, the Department has systematically built clinical, research, and educational programs that have become deeply integrated into the fabric of Penn Medicine, the University, and the community.

The Department is a national leader in education and its faculty are committed to training the next generation of specialists, sub-specialists and physician-investigators with a strong focus on leadership development. Its training programs have an outstanding reputation for providing a wide range of clinical and research experiences. Through strong mentorship and leadership development, the Department’s goal is to produce leaders in all realms of anesthesiology.

The Penn Center for Anesthesia Research emphasizes translational and interdisciplinary science, both within the department and other departments and institutes in the schools of medicine, nursing, arts and sciences, engineering and veterinary medicine, on Penn's unified campus. The research endeavors extend from the bench, to the bedside, to policy implications.

The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care is closely aligned with PeriOperative Services, has a collaborative relationship with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), in addition to key partnerships with Gastroenterology, Interventional Radiology, the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, Musculoskeletal Center, Neuroscience Center, Radiation Oncology, Spine Center and The Wharton School.

The Chair of the Department directs 115 faculty members, with an additional 109 faculty at CHOP, and 340 professional and support staff. Major hospital sites for clinical and educational activities include the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Hospital, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, CHOP and the Crescenz VA Medical Center, institutions of great distinction and diversity. The practice has 16,000 outpatient visits a year, with 3,700 annual new visits and nearly 9,300 active patients. In FY 2019, the department cared for over 49,000 inpatients. The Department is a member of the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP) and the Chair serves as a member of the Board of Directors of CPUP whose primary role is to coordinate the tripartite mission of Penn Medicine’s 18 clinical departments.

Requirements

Qualified candidates hold MD or MD/PhD degrees and qualify for faculty appointment as Associate Professor or Professor rank in the Standing Faculty of the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) at the University of Pennsylvania. Candidates must be a respected active practitioner with a distinguished national/international record of research and possess dynamic, inclusive leadership and administrative expertise. Candidates must have a clear commitment to – and excellence in – education, fostering an inclusive environment, and sponsorship and mentorship of a diverse cadre of students, residents, fellows and faculty. Candidates must have the demonstrated ability to foster strong collaborations among investigators within the Department, the PSOM, the campus community, and Philadelphia. The candidate must articulate a compelling vision for the future of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at Penn Medicine, the role of the department within a highly regarded academic medical center and the field of anesthesiology in general.
